Developmental Coaching

  • Developmental coaching is a one-on-one process that focuses on facilitating personal and professional growth (with a growth mindset) in individuals by helping them navigate the complexities of their developmental journey. Rooted in coaching psychology and adult development theories, developmental coaching aims to unlock a person's potential, improve self-awareness, and foster sustainable change

Developmental coaching is a dynamic and client-centered approach to personal coaching that recognizes that individuals evolve over time. It is not merely about addressing specific issues or goals but rather focuses on helping individuals navigate the complexities of their developmental journeys. In essence, developmental coaching assists individuals in understanding and leveraging their evolving mindsets, beliefs, and behaviors to achieve personal and professional success.

Developmental coaching is a dynamic and client-centered approach to personal coaching that recognizes that individuals evolve over time. It is not merely about addressing specific issues or goals but rather focuses on helping individuals navigate the complexities of their developmental journeys. Whereas traditional coaching might address a singular issue, developmental coaching delves deeper, exploring the individual's growth in a more complex way over time. Developmental coaching, at its essence, is akin to a compass for individuals navigating the ever-changing landscape of life.

    What is a Growth Mindset?

Growth mindset is conceptualized similarly to intrinsic motivation. Dr. Carol Dweck, the developer of growth mindset, discussed that intrinsic motivation can be internalized and motivation is possible to encourage. Dweck (2019) discussed that a growth mindset is a belief that intellectual abilities are malleable and can be improved with learning through the use of strategies, practice, and effort. Dweck (2006) suggests that a growth mindset evolves from an attitude of hard work, learning, training, and perseverance. Growth mindset is learning, growing, and hard work despite setbacks. In terms of emotions, a growth mindset assists a person in escaping the vicious cycle of worry and poor performance that results from viewing oneself as a failure. A person who has a growth mindset puts forth effort and advances without considering an incentive or reward as the final product (Dweck, 2019).

Individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to push themselves to learn new things and keep trying until they achieve their goals, since they are more confident that their efforts will lead to success (Dweck, 2019). People with a more persistent growth mindset believe that they can substantially change their intelligence and personality with effort (Dweck, 2006).

  • Growth Mindset

In terms of emotions, a growth mindset assists a person in escaping the vicious cycle of worry and poor performance that results from viewing oneself as a failure (Xia et al., 2022).A person who has a growth mindset puts forth effort and advances without considering an incentive or reward as the final product (Dweck, 2019).

People with a growth mindset are more likely to push themselves to learn new things and keep trying until they achieve their goals, since they are more confident that their efforts will lead to success (Dweck, 2019). People with a more persistent growth mindset believe that they can substantially change their intelligence and personality with effort (Dweck, 2006). A beginning teacher that possesses a growth mindset may improve their practices through both professional development sessions and hands-on experience in the classroom. Professional development sessions provide teachers with different techniques and teachers may choose optional professional development sessions to help strengthen their knowledge about specific content areas or classroom management strategies. Monistiere (2019) discussed that teachers with a growth mindset have a clear vision and believe that they can develop their abilities and traits with work. Teachers with a growth mindset believe they advance professionally. Teachers relish the obstacles they face as they develop and possess the capacity to accept setbacks headon and still have hope that they will ultimately succeed (Dweck, 2006, 2010b, 2015).

Conversely, a fixed mindset is the conviction that people are either gifted or not, and that there is nothing they can do about it (Dweck, 2006). Dweck (2006) discussed that instructors who have a fixed mindset, are typically more devoted to themselves, have inflated egos, and refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings. Monistiere (2019) discussed that teachers who have a fixed mindset see things hazily and think their abilities are predetermined. Teachers consequently may not think they can advance their careers and struggle to work closely with other teachers and valuable feedback may be viewed negatively (Dweck, 2006, 2010b, 2015). Having a fixed mindset may hinder a beginning teacher. Carmel et al. (2023) stated that frustration of physical and emotional needs can lead to diminished motivation in a beginning teacher, decrease their well being, and cause various psychological issues including burnout. However, having a growth mindset may prepare a beginning teacher with the tools needed to stay in the profession.

    Self-Determination Theory and Growth Mindset

Deci and Ryan’s (2008) SDT and Dweck’s (2006) growth mindset both emphasize intrinsic motivation. Employee appreciation directly increases intrinsic motivation, which stems from a worker's inner desire to perform well for the organization, the department, and for himself or herself as an important team member (Asaari et al., 2019). For new teachers, the combination of a growth mindset and intrinsic motivation is essential because intrinsic motivation can contribute to a beginning teacher having a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset can boost teachers' acceptance of the teaching modifications and protect them from personal fulfillment erosion when they face challenges, such as having to quickly adapt to online teaching or dealing with teaching reforms with insufficient resources or support (Lee et al., 2023).

Beginning teachers who have a growth mindset see learning and effort as ways to advance and develop their skills. Because they are passionate about the work they are doing and want to learn more, employees who are intrinsically motivated put in more effort at work (Huy, 2023). Having intrinsically motivated teachers increases the likelihood that they are motivated, regardless of any challenges. Furthermore, teachers who have a growth mindset frequently exhibit autonomy in their professional and personal development. As beginning teachers seek out challenges, grow from their errors, and assess new students, they demonstrate initiative and uphold autonomy as described by SDT. Additionally, supportive environments through the significance of social context and relationships, promoting learning from mistakes and offering helpful criticism can help cultivate a growth mindset and satisfy the SDT requirement for relatedness and potentially factor toward beginning teachers staying in the profession. Ryan and Deci’s (2000) self-determination theory in conjunction with Dweck’s (2006) growth mindset will be used in this study to help guide the understanding of motivation, intrinsic or extrinsic, behind beginning teachers choosing to stay in the profession despite the challenges that teachers face, especially in urban schools.

Qualitative research is a method of inquiry focused on understanding human experiences, behaviors, and social phenomena through non-numerical data. Rather than measuring things statistically, it seeks to explore the meaning behind them.

    Core characteristics:

    • Data types: Interviews, focus groups, observations, open-ended surveys, texts, and artifacts — essentially words, stories, and images rather than numbers.

    • Goal: To understand how and why people think, feel, or behave in certain ways, often within their natural context.

    • Approach: Inductive — researchers draw conclusions and build theories from the data, rather than testing a pre-set hypothesis.

    • Sample size: Typically small and purposefully selected, prioritizing depth over breadth.

Common methods include ethnography (immersive observation of a group), grounded theory (building theory from data), qualitative descriptive, phenomenology (exploring lived experience), and case studies.

Strengths: It's flexible, context-sensitive, and great for exploring complex or poorly understood topics. It captures nuance that numbers often miss.

Qualitative research is widely used in social sciences, education, healthcare, and business — anywhere understanding human perspective is more important than producing generalizable statistics.

Expert Support for Qualitative Data Analysis

One of the most challenging — and most critical — phases of your dissertation is making sense of your data. Our coaching provides hands-on, targeted support so you can analyze with confidence and academic credibility.

Choosing the Right Qualitative Analysis Approach

Many doctoral students collect rich data only to feel paralyzed when it's time to analyze it. A key part of our coaching is helping you select an analysis approach that aligns with your research questions, epistemological stance, and methodology. We walk you through the most widely used frameworks, including:

    • Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, Saldana, and More) — Ideal for identifying patterns and themes across a dataset. Great for flexible, theory-driven or inductive work.

    • Grounded Theory Analysis — For students building theory directly from data through open, axial, and selective coding.

    • Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) — Best suited for deeply exploring individual lived experiences and meaning-making.

    • Narrative Analysis — For research centered on personal stories and how people construct identity and meaning through them.

    • Discourse Analysis — For examining how language shapes and reflects social reality.

    • Content Analysis and Systematic Literature Reviews — A more structured approach for systematically categorizing qualitative data, sometimes bridging qualitative and quantitative methods.

We help you understand not just what each approach involves, but why it fits — or doesn't fit — your specific study, so you can defend your choice confidently to your committee.

    Hands-On Data Analysis Support

Once you've chosen your approach, we guide you through the entire analysis process step by step:

    • Familiarization — Understanding how to immerse yourself in your data before jumping to conclusions

    • Coding — Developing an initial coding framework, whether inductive, deductive, or a combination of both

    • Theme Development — Moving from raw codes to meaningful, well-defined themes or categories

    • Interpretation and Reflexivity — Going beyond description to draw out deeper insights and connect findings to your theoretical framework

    • Member Checking & Trustworthiness — Strengthening the credibility and rigor of your analysis through established validation strategies

Coaching for Qualitative Research Designs — Finding the Right Fit for Your Study

One of the earliest and most consequential decisions in your dissertation journey is choosing your research design. Get it right, and everything flows. Get it wrong, and you'll face pushback from your committee at every turn. Our coaching helps doctoral students select, understand, and defend the qualitative design that best fits their study — with confidence.

The Most Common Qualitative Designs We Coach

Phenomenology Exploring the lived experience of a phenomenon from the perspective of those who have experienced it. We help you understand the difference between descriptive (Husserl) and interpretive (Heidegger) approaches and determine which aligns with your worldview and research questions.

Grounded Theory Building theory from the ground up through systematic data collection and analysis. We coach you through the Strauss & Corbin and Charmaz constructivist variations and help you understand when grounded theory is — and isn't — the right choice.

Ethnography Studying a culture or group in depth through immersive observation and participation. We help you navigate the demands of fieldwork, positionality, and thick description that ethnographic research requires.

Case Study (Yin & Merriam) Conducting an in-depth exploration of a bounded system — a person, program, organization, or event. We help you distinguish between single and multiple case designs and build a strong rationale for your case selection.

Qualitative Descriptive Design – A qualitative descriptive study is a research approach focused on describing and summarizing experiences, events, or phenomena as they naturally occur, without trying to explain causes or test theories.

Narrative Inquiry Centering human stories as the primary source of data and meaning. We coach you on how to collect, analyze, and represent personal narratives in a way that honors both rigor and the voice of your participants.

Action Research Ideal for practitioner-scholars looking to study and improve their own professional context. We help you balance the dual role of researcher and participant while maintaining academic credibility.

*If you do not see your design or Project Plan (many universities have Projects for Doctoral Students), we do accommodate such and have experts that will coach and work with you on your specific design/project.

What Makes Choosing a Design So Difficult — And How We Help

Many doctoral students struggle because they confuse methodology with method, or choose a design based on what sounds impressive rather than what actually fits their study. Our coaching cuts through the confusion by helping you:

    • Align your research design with your research questions, purpose, and philosophical worldview

    • Understand the assumptions and requirements behind each design

    • Articulate and defend your design choices clearly in your proposal and dissertation

    • Avoid the most common design mistakes that slow students down or trigger committee revisions

    • Understand the relationship between your design, data collection methods, and analysis approach so everything in your study is coherent and well-justified

Why This Matters for Your Dissertation Success

Your committee wants to see that you didn't just pick a design randomly. They want to see intentionality, alignment, and scholarly reasoning. Our coaching ensures you can walk into your proposal defense knowing exactly why you made the choices you did and how to articulate them under pressure.

Specialized Dissertation Coaching in Case Study & Qualitative Descriptive Research

If your dissertation involves a case study or qualitative descriptive design, you need a coach who understands these approaches at a deep level, not just the basics. Our coaching is specifically tailored to doctoral students working within these two powerful and widely used qualitative traditions.

    Case Study Design Coaching

Case study research is one of the most commonly chosen,  and most commonly misunderstood qualitative designs in doctoral research. Many students choose it because it feels intuitive, only to struggle when their committee pushes back on their rationale, boundaries, or analysis approach.

We provide specialized coaching grounded in the foundational work of Robert Yin and Sharan Merriam, the two most cited case study scholars, helping you understand how their approaches differ and which one best fits your study.

    We help you with:

    • Defining and bounding your case — One of the most critical and most mishandled aspects of case study research. We help you clearly define what your case is, what it is not, and how to justify its boundaries to your committee

    • Single vs. multiple case design — Understanding when a single case is sufficient and defensible, and when a multiple case design adds comparative strength

    • Intrinsic, instrumental, and collective cases (Stake) — Clarifying the purpose and nature of your case so your rationale is airtight

    • Data collection strategies — Case study relies on multiple sources of evidence including interviews, documents, observations, and artifacts. We help you build a coherent data collection plan that reflects true triangulation

    • Case study analysis — Walking you through within-case and cross-case analysis, pattern matching, and explanation building so your findings are rich and defensible

    • Writing the case — Helping you present your case in a narrative that is engaging, evidence-based, and academically rigorous

    • Defending your design — Preparing you to answer the tough committee questions about why case study was the right choice for your research questions and context

    Qualitative Descriptive Design Coaching

Qualitative descriptive (QD) design is one of the most practical and straightforward qualitative approaches, yet it is frequently misused, misidentified, or poorly justified in dissertations. Many students default to QD without fully understanding its philosophical foundations or how to distinguish it from other designs, leaving them vulnerable during their proposal and defense.

Our coaching is grounded in the seminal work of Sandelowski and other leading QD scholars, helping you build a study that is clearly articulated, well-justified, and methodologically sound.

    We help you with:

    • Understanding what QD actually is — Clarifying the purpose, assumptions, and appropriate use of qualitative descriptive design so you can articulate it with precision

    • Distinguishing QD from other designs — Helping you explain why your study is not phenomenology, grounded theory, or another interpretive approach, and why QD is the most appropriate fit

    • Philosophical alignment — Grounding your design in a naturalistic, pragmatic, or constructivist worldview depending on your study's purpose

    • Research question development — Crafting questions that are truly descriptive in nature and aligned with QD's goal of producing a rich, straight description of phenomena

    • Data collection methods — Semi-structured interviews and content analysis are the most common QD tools. We help you design your protocol and sampling strategy with rigor

    • Conventional content analysis — Walking you through the inductive coding process most commonly associated with QD so your analysis is systematic and credible

    • Trustworthiness strategies — Helping you establish credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability within a QD framework

    • Writing and presenting findings — Guiding you in presenting descriptive findings that are rich, clear, and directly responsive to your research questions without over-interpreting

Why Specialize in These Two Designs?

Case study and qualitative descriptive designs are among the most frequently used in applied doctoral programs including education, healthcare, business, nursing, public administration, and organizational leadership. They are practical, accessible, and powerful when done correctly. But they are also frequently misapplied, which is why having a coach with deep expertise in these specific designs can make the difference between a smooth proposal approval and endless committee revisions.

You’ve worked too hard to get stuck now.

You're deep into your doctoral journey — but the dissertation feels like a wall you can't get over. Your design chapter isn't coming together. Your committee keeps asking questions you don't know how to answer. You're not sure if your study is truly a case study or qualitative descriptive design, and frankly, you're not confident you could defend the difference.

You don't need a generic writing coach. You need a specialist.

    Why Specialized Coaching Matters

Most dissertation coaches offer broad support across research methods. We do something different. Our coaching is built around two of the most widely used, and most frequently mishandled qualitative designs in applied doctoral programs:

Case Study Research and Qualitative Descriptive Design.

These designs show up constantly in education, healthcare, nursing, business, organizational leadership, and public administration doctoral programs. And yet they are routinely misapplied, poorly justified, and inadequately defended — leading to costly revisions, delayed approvals, and unnecessary stress.

Our coaching gives you the specialized expertise to get it right the first time.

    Who This Is For

This coaching is designed for doctoral students who are:

    • Working on a dissertation using a case study or qualitative descriptive design

    • Struggling to clearly define, bound, or justify their research design

    • Facing committee pushback on their methodology or research questions

    • Overwhelmed by data collection, coding, or analysis

    • Looking for expert, one-on-one guidance from proposal through defense

    • Enrolled in applied doctoral programs in education, healthcare, business, nursing, leadership, or public administration

    Our Areas of Specialization

    📌 Case Study Dissertation Coaching

Case study research is one of the most powerful qualitative designs available to doctoral students but it comes with specific requirements that many students underestimate. Grounded in the foundational frameworks of Robert Yin and Sharan Merriam, our case study coaching helps you build a study that is clearly defined, methodologically sound, and fully defensible.

    We provide expert coaching on:

Defining and Bounding Your Case The single most common mistake in case study dissertations is a poorly defined or unbounded case. We help you clearly articulate what your case is, establish its boundaries, and justify those boundaries to your committee with confidence.

Choosing Your Case Study Approach We walk you through the key differences between Yin's positivist-leaning approach and Merriam's interpretivist framework — and help you determine which is the right philosophical fit for your study. We also explore Stake's typology of intrinsic, instrumental, and collective cases to sharpen your rationale.

Single vs. Multiple Case Design Not every study needs multiple cases — but some are significantly strengthened by them. We help you make this decision strategically and defend it clearly in your proposal.

Data Collection & Triangulation Case study research draws on multiple sources of evidence — interviews, documents, observations, and artifacts. We help you design a coherent, rigorous data collection plan that demonstrates true methodological triangulation.

Within-Case and Cross-Case Analysis We guide you through the analysis process step by step — from initial coding and categorization to pattern matching, explanation building, and cross-case comparison for multiple case designs.

Writing and Presenting Your Case A well-written case study tells a story while maintaining academic rigor. We help you structure and write your findings chapter in a way that is narrative, evidence-rich, and compelling to your committee.

Defense Preparation We prepare you for the tough questions your committee will ask about your design, boundaries, data sources, and analysis — so you walk into your defense ready for anything.

    📌 Qualitative Descriptive Dissertation Coaching

Qualitative descriptive design is practical, accessible, and ideal for applied research — but it is one of the most misunderstood designs in doctoral programs. Many students choose QD without being able to clearly articulate what it is, how it differs from other qualitative approaches, or how to justify it philosophically. Grounded in the seminal work of Sandelowski and other leading QD scholars, our coaching helps you build a QD study that is precise, well-justified, and academically rigorous.

    We provide expert coaching on:

Understanding and Articulating QD We help you develop a clear, scholarly explanation of what qualitative descriptive design I,  its purpose, assumptions, and appropriate use, so you can present it with confidence in your proposal and defense.

Distinguishing QD from Other Designs One of the most common committee challenges for QD students is explaining why their study is not phenomenology, grounded theory, or thematic analysis. We help you draw these distinctions clearly and defend your design choice with scholarly grounding.

Philosophical and Epistemological Alignment We help you ground your QD study in an appropriate worldvie, whether naturalistic, pragmatic, or constructivist, and articulate that alignment in your methodology chapter.

Crafting Descriptive Research Questions QD research questions must be genuinely descriptive in nature. We help you develop and refine questions that are aligned with QD's goal of producing a rich, straightforward description of a phenomenon as experienced by participants.

Data Collection Design Semi-structured interviews are the most common data collection method in QD research. We help you design a rigorous interview protocol, develop your sampling strategy, and plan for data saturation.

Conventional Content Analysis and Thematic Analysis We walk you through the inductive coding process most commonly used in QD studies, from initial open coding through category development and theme identification, ensuring your analysis is systematic, transparent, and credible.

Establishing Trustworthiness We help you apply Lincoln and Guba's trustworthiness criteria, credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability, within a QD framework so your study meets the highest standards of qualitative rigor.

Writing Descriptive Findings QD findings should be rich, clear, and directly responsive to your research questions, without veering into interpretation beyond what the data supports. We help you strike that balance and present your findings with precision and clarity.

  • Narcissistic Abuse is defined as non-physical abuse perpetrated by someone exhibiting narcissistic traits or behavior (including but not limited to emotional, psychological, and mental abuse, coercive control and bullying).  It is one of the most common, yet least acknowledged forms of abuse that without fail has a detrimental and life-altering impact on the survivor’s (mental) health and quality of life. Survivors often lose everything - their career, money and house, their dignity, self-respect, self-worth and most importantly themselves. The life they knew is gone, and so is the person they thought they were. They literally start from scratch, rebuilding their lives and themselves.

Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching is a very advanced form of coaching. Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching also means stabilizing the client’s emotional well-being, removing triggers and updating any faulty conditioning to ensure it won’t happen again in the future.

It is important to note that having experienced Narcissistic Abuse in itself does not qualify anyone to coach others and without sufficient deep healing on oneself and additional in-depth specialist training, it can cause more harm than good. It is important to understand that Narcissistic Abuse results in complex trauma, which at times can exhibit severe mental health challenges (cPTSD).

Coaching is only suitable at the later stages of the healing process.  Please do not coach a client during the acute stages of their recovery journey without having completed appropriate training in suitable trauma intervention modalities but refer them to a qualified professional instead.

Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching means providing the survivor with the support and tools, such as values elicitation, that allow them to uncover their authentic self, probably for the first time in their lives.  This in turn opens the doors for them to create their most authentic life, completely in line with their new and healthy values and belief systems.

*How Can Coaching Help Narcissistic Abuse Survivors?

    1. Provide A Non-Judgmental and Safe Environment

People who have experienced Narcissistic Abuse often go through the darkest time of their life seemingly all alone. Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching means holding the space for someone to recover themselves, having their back when everyone else has written them off as lost cause, and believing in them even if they don’t themselves.

    2. Keep the Eye On The Ball

Recovery from narcissistic abuse is anything but linear and oftentimes feels like going one step forward and three steps back. Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching means holding the goal of being healthy on behalf of the client, while they are not capable of doing so themselves. It means keeping the eye on the ball, actively bringing the focus back on themselves, away from the narcissist, and moving forward when the mind naturally is drawn to hold onto the past.

    3. Use Language Consciously

Narcissistic Abuse causes significant linguistic damage in the victim. In simple terms, they’ve undergone calculated and systematic brainwashing. Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching means identifying unhealthy language patterns and limiting beliefs through active listening and challenging them.

    4. Set Goals

After having experienced narcissistic abuse, survivors find themselves in a place where they don’t know who they are, how they got here and where they’re supposed to be going. Imagining a future is impossible in the beginning and the initial goal is usually simply to stay alive. Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coaching means gently supporting the client to allow themselves to dream again. Step by step, nudge by nudge until a new and healthy life comes more and more into reach for the first time in a long time.

    5. Create an Authentic Life

Abuse survivors tend to always put other peoples’ needs and well-being before their own, always playing by other people’s rules, never having known who they truly are. Clients learn to build a new authentic life of their own that they deserve and will develop and flourish in.
